Material
The material you select for your backsplash helps set the tone for the design and style of your kitchen. Going for a rustic look? We suggest staying away from glossy, sleek-looking tile and instead, choosing more of a worn look (brick or tumbled stone, for example). Pairing a rustic tile with a darker stained cabinet, or a painted cabinet with a glazed finish, would be the perfect combination.
Color
Color (or lack of color) is another choice that will need to be made for your backsplash. Many homeowners use their kitchen backsplash as an opportunity to add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral space. With that being said, the trend over the past few years has been to keep the backsplash neutral as well, making the space clean and consistent. For example, we have all seen the white cabinets with white subway tile look all over and there’s a reason for that. It’s classic and timeless and won’t be going out of style any time soon. If you are struggling with what to choose, you could always mix color and neutral by combining a main backsplash in a neutral with an accent band of colorful tile.
Countertops
After the cabinets, your countertops are usually the next biggest decision in the kitchen design process. Your backsplash should complement the countertops and not compete with it. The busier your countertops are, the calmer your backsplash should be and vice versa. If you have a relatively neutral countertop, with not a lot of movement or veining, mix it up with your backsplash and let that be the standout in your kitchen.
Budget
Budget is a main factor in all decisions when it comes to any home project. Backsplashes cover a relatively small area, but can blow a budget really quickly! You may love a beautiful, intricate tile, but will covering your entire kitchen in it break the bank? Consider saving the special tile for an accent, for above the stove for example, and select a simpler, more affordable option to use as the main backsplash. The upside to remodeling or designing a new kitchen these days is that the options are limitless and there are so many resources online and locally that there should be no problem finding a backsplash that fits your style and your budget!
